Wii Have a Question For Yuu
Apparently, I'm outgrowing my SNES.

Let's say one wanted to buy some sort of gaming system for the sole purpose of playing either Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Or possibly some sort of singing game like Sing Star or whatever. But one is not heavily invested (or at all invested) in any other games. This being the case:

a) Which gaming system should this person buy? Said person is thinking of Wii, because it's more affordable than the Playstation 3 (Hello!?! $400???). Said person is wondering if the Playstation 2 will soon be on the outs since, you know. It's an old version. Said person is wondering what's up with the XBox. Any good? Avoid?

b) Let's say said person boought a gaming system. Should said person buy Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Let the record show that it would be Guitar Hero World Tour since, hello. Drums and mic etc are a must. Which one of these is better? Does it really even matter?

c) If you bought the necessary plastic instruments for one game, can you use them with the software for the other game? Or must you buy 2 separate sets of plastic instruments? Which would be ridiculous.

d) Is there anything else said person should know?

Said person would like your (hopefully informed) comments. Please.

You are seriously going to buy a game so that you can pretend to play instruments? Why do you need a game for that, just do air guitar to music. I don't get it.

Oh, Joleen. This just tells me that you have never played either game. Otherwise, you would understand. Me?--I've only played it like 3 times and still I sit around and pine for it on an hourly basis.

(Why play Super Mario Kart? Why not just sit around and pretend to race cars against koopa troopas? Srsly.)

Plus, on a non-plastic-instrument basis, the functionality of Wii is pretty neat.

BLURGH!/BLERG!

OMG on the Happy Bday front!

I completely lost all sense of datage last week. But a few days ago I was looking at a calendar and saw that last Monday was the 17th and I thought, "AHHH!!! I missed Joleen's Birthday!" Then I was going to write you an email or something, but I was in class and it started. So I couldn't. Then I forgot again. :(

I'm a horrible person. And you're 31. Whoa.

Didn't you get rid of your Playstation when you left Napa? Didn't Sunny trade someone your Playstation for that hand-held Playstation, whatever that's called? But hells yeah. I'll take it! I suppose I could manage to wait an extra month or so to sate my cravings. Or something.

Awesome.

Never mind. i just found out the playstation we bought here won't play games from the US. Stupid different region crap, why do they do that? What's the point?

Don't forget that you can pay back your neighbors. I guess I ASS-U-ME-d that it was you you were talking about.

I love how you wrote Blurgh/blerg.

My sisters have a playstation 2 and they have guitar hero. L&M have I think a playstation?? but they cannot get GH world tour. I'd have to ask them or look up my email.

I would say, if you are going to get one, check out the song list. Also check out which one you can go online with (Xbox?) That might be cool. One of them has a Coldplay song. I could also ask Nate because he literally has every game system and every game there is. Including all the guitar hero(e)s and rock bands.

Also totally look on ebay or something for used/refurbished ones...they might even have refurbished ones on the official site (they usually do for computers) although I doubt there will be many Wiis.

a)The base 360 model is actually cheaper than a Wii. It also seems to have the best cross-peripheral support. (see c))

b)If you are only going to buy one game, look at the song lists to see which appeals to you more. If you will get both eventually, then it really comes down to whichever instrument set you prefer.

d)It might be cheaper to buy the orignal Rockband set, and then get just the newer games. Or a newer game/guitar combo if you want the full 4 player experience.

We have a Wii, which can play Gamecube games (and you can hook in the old controllers, if you or someone has them), and can go online. However, it doesn't have a hard disc inside like the XBox or PS3, so you have to buy memory for it (well, after a point - we never have). I would highly recommend it, since you are familiar with the Mario games and it does have all of the Rock Band/Guitar Hero/etc. There are a ton of Wiis out there this month, actually - we saw about 50 stacked up at a Best Buy in Blaine a week ago.

We also have a PS2, which they are still making games for for some reason - I just bought a new SingStar game last week - "Legends". Thats what we play Rock Band, Guitar Hero and SingStar on. SingStar is a Sony game, so it would only be available for PS2/PS3. I like it more than other karaoke games because it uses all original music, not songs that are rerecorded by other people (like some songs on Guitar Hero are, which is annoying to me). I think you can get a PS2 new for $120, so its probably a lot cheaper and easy to get used. The annoying thing about playing Rock Band on PS2 and not PS3 or XBox is that you can't have a band and personalized avatars, and you can't download new songs (I think they are $2 each).

I think the best one to get right now is the Wii. This is because I like more games that are only on Nintendo - any Mario game, the WiiSports game, WiiFit.

Thats my take on it. I personally want a PS3 because it has the best/cheapest BluRay player, but if you don't have an HD tv, that isn't really a consideration for you right now.

Also, next time you are in the cities, let me know! I barely ever get to play the karaoke games in particular because I feel dumb singing by myself (Michael refuses). We could hang and play video games like dorks all day! Also, the new MarioKart is fun, and there are a couple of races that are taken from the SNES version.

I love Rock Band!!! Jake and I don't have it ourselves, but a couple of our friends do and so does my family. Our friend Rob has it on PS3, and my family has it on the Wii, and I don't recall any major difference in the games. Jake says that the Xbox is probably the cheapest system out there, but thinks you'd probably like the Wii more, as there are a lot of other games for that system you'd probably enjoy.

There's also this American Idol game that is kind of fun. I played that once at our friend Tonia's. I think it was on the Wii, but is probably out for other systems too. It gives you the opportunity to sing songs like "My Cherie Amor", which Rock Band wouldn't have on it.

Guitar Hero is okay, but I like Rock Band better. I haven't played the World Tour one, though.
